This time last year University Challenge fever was running high in College as the St John’s team were gearing up for their first ever appearance in a final. They were up against the fast and fierce Merton College, Oxford, but they managed to pull ahead and keep their lead, winning the final 145-100.
Now a year later the televised quiz show is once again reaching its final stage. The original 24 teams have been whittled down to two – St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and the University of Edinburgh. But only one will win the chance to have their name engraved on the trophy (which has now sadly left its display case in our library and is back with the BBC).

UEA alumni will appear on BBC Two’s Christmas University Challenge on Christmas Day. The festive series of the popular quiz show hosted by Jeremy Paxman sees teams of alumni from different universities competing against one another.
In October, UEA students reached the first-round match of the regular series of the TV quiz show. Ed Bellamy, Mathew Reid, Mathew Walker and Madeline Forde-Roberts represented UEA against Keble College, Oxford, but unfortunately were defeated.

Its producers have appealed to universities to enter diverse teams, and question-setters are including what are regarded as more female-friendly subjects in an attempt to improve the gender balance. However, two recent champions have warned that intelligent young women still think twice about applying because of fears that social media abuse and stories about their looks will overshadow their professional record online.
Appearing on University Challenge can harm the careers of female students as their academic accomplishments are eclipsed by sexist articles about their appearance, a former winner has suggested.
